Fairfax's Formula Business Moratorium: What It Covers, When It Ends

Fairfax is currently barring any new Formula Business from opening in town — the town's term for a chain retailer or restaurant with eight or more locations already operating elsewhere.

The moratorium isn't new but it is temporary: it took effect March 4, 2026 and is set to expire April 18, 2027 unless the Town Council votes to extend it for another year.

The town has not indicated in this notice what would trigger an extension or what policy work, if any, is happening in the meantime — but the clock is now running on just over seven months before the ban lapses on its own.
