With City Hall on summer pause, the emergency commission sets the season's calendar

The week after the Fourth of July was about as quiet as Mill Valley government gets. No Council meeting, no Planning Commission, no contested project, no permit fight. The city's civic life produced exactly one public document: the July 9 agenda of the Emergency Preparedness Commission.

Even that was routine — consent-calendar minutes, reports from the Mill Valley Police Department, the Southern Marin Fire District and the Neighborhood Response Coordinators, and a look back at June's Miller Nights and Freedom Fest/Juneteenth outreach, where the commission staffs tables and hands out preparedness materials. Old business also covered the Spring/Summer Preparedness Survey and the perennially unglamorous question of banner and go-bag inventory.

The forward-looking half is where residents can actually show up. Commissioners were set to walk through Truckloads of Fun on July 17, an OEM field trip July 14, a CERT training session in July, National Night Out on Aug. 4, and Sidewalk CPR training Aug. 14 at Depot Plaza. Longer term, the commission is taking first steps on a 2027–2030 Strategic Plan, with a full-day retreat set for Oct. 8, 2026 to shape it.

That's the week. If you skipped every daily, you missed nothing except a calendar — but it's a calendar worth marking, since the strategic plan is the document that will govern how Mill Valley organizes itself for the next fire season and the one after that.
