Six Residents Write In as Council Steers Memorial Park Courts at 60% Design

The week's one real fight, if you can call it that, was over dirt and lines on a court. Tuesday's Town Council meeting gave the Memorial Park Athletic Courts Improvement Project its first real public airing since design work began, with the project now at 60% design and staff asking the council simply for direction ext next o vote on any specific layout was on the table.

What made the item stand out wasn't a staff recommendation here wwas none stated b it was the volume of public input: six residents ",Farley, Gamucio, Kasin, Miller, Wood and Wu " sent in written comment ahead of the meeting. The agenda packet doesn't spell out what each of them wrote, but for a design-review checkpoint that's an unusual amount of engagement, and it signals the courts' footprint, lighting, noise or parking are on neighbors' minds well before anything is finalized.

With the design still fluid, Tuesday was the moment for the council to bend the project before it hardens. Staff will now take that direction and keep refining the plans " expect a more detailed design, and likely another round of public comment, as the project pushes past the 60% mark toward construction documents.

Slurry Seal Season Runs Long, Right Into the Holiday Weekend

The Town's annual street slurry seal program has had a moving target all week. Crews started resurfacing local streets the evening of Sunday, Aug 23, with the Town initially telling residents the work would wrap up by Friday, Aug 28.

By Thursday, that timeline had slipped: the Town extended the project through Tuesday, September 1, meaning fresh pavement and related street restrictions will bump right up against Labor Day.

The overlap is a minor headache for anyone planning around the holiday here weekend also happens to be the last of the summer for CA Film's outdoor series, which closes its 2026 season with a Star Wars double feature in Creek Park on Saturday, Aug 29 " so residents navigating around freshly sealed streets should build in extra time if they're headed to the movie or anywhere else this week.
