Town Council · meeting of October 13
Tobacco sales debate draws a wave of written comment
The Town Council reopened a conversation it started back in June, taking up a discussion item on potential new regulations for tobacco sales in San Anselmo. The item carried no staff recommendation and wasn't subject to CEQA review, signaling the town is still feeling out what, if anything, it wants to change.
That didn't stop a flood of input. The council received dozens of written comments from residents, public-health groups including Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights and Breath California, and industry groups such as the California Fuels & Convenience Alliance and the National Association of Tobacco Outlets — plus a formal appeal letter, a sign that whatever rules eventually emerge will be contested from both directions.
No vote and no outcome came out of Tuesday's session, and the agenda offered no hint of specifics — flavor bans, licensing caps, or buffer zones all remain possible. Expect a fuller, more concrete proposal once staff works through the comment pile.

Two homeowners seek reduced side setbacks this week
Monday's Planning Commission docket carries two unrelated variance requests that both turn on the same question: how close is too close to the property line. At 231 San Francisco Blvd., the owner wants a Design Review and Variance (PRO2025-0044) to add a second story and cut the southwest side setback to four feet, half the eight-foot minimum in the R-1 zone.
Across town at 195 The Alameda, a separate owner is asking to demolish a detached garage and rebuild it attached to the house, keeping the existing one-foot north side setback rather than pulling back to the required eight feet (PRO2026-0042).
Neither application comes with a staff recommendation or recorded public comment in the posted materials, so Monday's hearing — 7 p.m. in Council Chambers, with a Zoom option — will be the first real test of how commissioners view each request. The same meeting opens with a CEQA 101 study session on the General Plan 2045 update.

Memorial Park courts and fundraising head to commission
The Parks and Recreation Commission takes its first substantive look Tuesday at the Memorial Park Athletic Court Improvements Project, with a staff report and presentation but no design, cost, or timeline details yet published. It's the kind of meeting that sets the terms of debate rather than settling anything.
Paired with it is a vote to select a subcommittee to lead fundraising for Memorial Park improvements, suggesting the town wants money lined up alongside whatever design emerges. No funding target has been disclosed.
Residents hoping to shape the courts' redesign, or to land a seat on the fundraising subcommittee, get their first real chance to speak up Tuesday evening.
